Furong Town, formerly called Wangcun Town, is an ancient settlement with a thousand-year history. It is renowned for its time-honored past, beautiful natural scenery, old streets and unique folk customs. It is also remembered by film buffs for the movie “Furong Town”, shot there in 1986. The town changed its name into Furong in 2007. As one of Xiangxi’s four famous towns, Furong Town receives nearly 1 million visitors each year. In recent years, it has won a number of honorary titles such as national historical and cultural town and been named among China’s top 10 tourism and leisure ancient towns.

Situated in the Wuling Mountain area, Furong Town is a place to gather for Tujia, Miao and Han peoples; the Tujia people account for more than 80 percent of its population. The town has rich tourism resources, including the Xizhou copper pillar, stilted building groups, ancient tombs of the Western Han Dynasty and other famous scenic areas.

Furong is not only a time-honored ancient town, but also a tourist attraction with natural scenery and ethnic style. It is a core scenic spot of the Mengdong River Scenic Area. In Furong, one of the must-see scenic sites is the Xizhou copper pillar that is regarded as a sacred object by Tujia people and an important historical recorder for studying the history of the Tujia ethnic group.
